Seafarers’ House at Port Everglades

Being a mariner may sound like an exciting life. Tales of travel and adventure await. But it also can be a lonely and sometimes even dangerous one. Seafarers’ often are away from their families for months at a time, missing important milestones such as birthdays, anniversaries and sometimes even the birth or death of a loved one.

When they come into Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, these mariners can be secure in the knowledge they have somewhere to go and someone with whom to speak. Seafarers’ House is a safe, friendly place where mariners can seek guidance, connect with their communities and families via free WiFi, relax, and get emergency help if needed.

We provide access to pastoral care and counseling, emergency assistance, local ground transportation and everyday items through our pastoral team and our on-shore and onboard services. Those who may not be able to leave their ships due to time constraints or visa restrictions have access to our services from their vessels.

The seafarers served by this program come from around the globe. Their countries of origin are as varied as the countries of the world. They spend most of their lives at sea. They are strangers to new cultures and languages. Most seafarers work away from their families to provide for them. Some seek to escape the economic disadvantages of their native countries. They strive to provide their families with what many of us take for granted: food, shelter, and a future. In all cases, their hard work and the privations that many of them undergo underpin the local as well as the global economy.

Seafarers are a vital part of the economy of Broward County. They work on cargo ships that richly benefit Broward County by transporting all its cement, lumber and fuel, as well as the vast majority of its international trade, such as fruits, vegetables, electronics, etc.

Within a cruise industry that so hugely impacts Broward County’s tourist-oriented economy; cruise ships are crewed by hundreds of men and women who live where they work on board vessels. These ships are berthed at Port Everglades.

In addition to the hundreds of thousands of mariners we serve annually, we also serve the over 15,000 workers in the port community.


During the months of November and December, Seafarers’ House hopes to hand out as many as 3,000 wrapped shoeboxes filled with socks, toiletries, and holiday cheer to the seafarers who come from all over the world into our Port Everglades. They are all so very far away from home and family during the holidays and these small gifts mean so much!

And we need your help starting right NOW to prepare!

Please bring any of the following items to the Conference and drop them off at the AFP Gives Back Table in the Las Olas Foyer by noon on Tuesday, June 19.

  • Soap/Shower Gel

 Adult Shoe Boxes

Clean standard sized (approx. 11” X 7”) Adult Shoe Boxes

You are welcome to wrap or paint. If so, please decorate the box and the lid separately so that the lid can be removed for assembling boxes.

 If you would like to participate but are unable to shop or are traveling and can’t transport items, you may make a monetary donation to underwrite the cost of these special gifts. 

  • $12 supports the cost of a wrapped shoebox gift of toiletry and important items to mariners.
  • $22 supports the cost of a complete shoebox gift plus $10 Sim Card to help a mariner connect with their family

100% of your donation will go towards needed items for the shoebox delivery or the purchase of phone cards (at a special discount) to include inside every shoebox.  Visit the website below for more details.
